On Wednesday, October 14, the Gaels of Mount Saint Joe faced off against Archbishop Curley in a critical Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference soccer match, and boy was this game full of excitement! On Thursday, after the dust had settled on the match, I was able to interview the Head Coach of the Gaels, Coach St. Martin, and when I mentioned the Maryland rankings he told me that he doesn’t put too much thought into the rankings and what matters to him is how many points the Gaels are out of the playoffs.
With the win on Wednesday, the Gaels jumped over Curley for 5th in the MIAA-A conference and improved their record to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the conference. There was a scary moment during the game, however, as Sophomore Logan Stevens was injured and had to be taken to the hospital. I asked Coach St. Martin for an update on Logan, and he told us that he was supposed to be discharged last night (Wednesday) but the doctors wanted him to stay overnight for observation. Obviously, it was good to hear that the scans seemed to come back negative, and we hope for a speedy return for Logan to school and to the field.
If you watched the game, then you know how this game came down to the wire. In the 88 minute, Junior Joe Clark from the corner played a perfect ball to Senior Steve White who placed the ball perfectly for Sophomore Jake Mazzei to score the game-winner, a header into the corner of the goal. The Gaels are on a roll, winning six of their last seven games.
Their next game is on Oct. 16 against Gilman. For the full interview with Coach St. Martin, click here.
