Last year, the Baltimore Orioles finished in last place overall in the MLB (Major League Baseball). Last year the Orioles had 45 wins and 115 losses. With the 2019 MLB season being over for the Orioles, this year O’s who are much younger and inexperienced, have more wins than the team from last year. This Orioles team ended the season at 54-108. As I wrote about in a previous article, the Orioles have brought in a new skipper, Brandon Hyde.
Brandon Hyde replaced previous manager Buck Showalter at the end of the 2018 season. Buck Showalter was the Orioles manager for 8 seasons before getting replaced by Hyde. Showalter had a good run with the Orioles, especially in the 2014 season with a run to the ALCS (American League Championship Series), but they got swept by the Kansas City Royals. Ever since then, the Orioles haven’t been the same. In 2018, the Orioles had the worst record in MLB history. Even with a less experienced team and with a lot of experimenting by bringing up young players, the Orioles still have more wins than last year’s team.
Manager Brandon Hyde really did well working with what he had. Throughout the season he has been brought up a lot of young talent to the big stage to see what they have to offer. He will be doing that a lot for the next few seasons because right now, the Orioles future is in the minors. The Orioles had the first overall pick and took Adley Rutschman, who is a catcher and looks to be very promising in the near future. Rutschman, playing in AA, had a batting average of .254, an OBP (On-Base Percentage) of .351, SLG (Slugging) of .423 and his OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging) was .774. He had 4 HR (Home runs) and 26 RBI (Runs Batted In). For someone fresh out of college, thrust directly into Single A ball, he was on the top of his game. Orioles’ fans will most likely be seeing him around the 2021 season and maybe even late in the 2020 season.
While the season was devoid of highlights, during the last game of the year, right fielder Stevie Wilkerson had the CATCH OF THE YEAR. Jackie Bradley Jr. was up to bat for the Boston Red Sox and had a line drive hit into the right field corner as Stevie Wilkerson tracked it down and leaped almost into the stands and made the catch for a robbery of a home run.
Through a lot of trades and playing the field with the minors the Orioles on their way for a long and tremendous rebuild. It can take a while for the team to become what they once were, but in the end it’ll be worth it.
